FREEDOM OF OPINION AND EXPRESSION

There are times when we need to be alert and I am going to do just that here, disregarding my precise blogging for the moment. The event which prompted this is the passing of the,

"PROMOTION AND PROTECTION OF ALL HUMAN RIGHTS, CIVIL, POLITICAL, ECONOMIC, SOCIAL AND CULTURAL RIGHTS INCLUDING THE RIGHT TO DEVELOPMENT"

Resolution proposed this time by the US of A and Egypt at the UN on the 2nd of October 2009.

Sure, it is the final product of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights of December 10, 1948 and contains all the elaborations to the text up to this point.

Obama administration did this thing right I must say. They were under duress from certain sectors and antagonism from a section of the American public who are out to get terrorists as a whole. I have sympathy for the anti-terrorist group too. There is no use talking to a bunch of brainwashed robots armed with all sorts of explosives who are lurking in the dark to smoke us all. They need to be dealt with brutally. This land has been witnessing strange things on that front recently. But it is not necessary to go overboard with criticism when a resolution like this is approved by the UN.

These ideas were in force ever since the birth of the UN and are fundamental to the promotion of brotherhood among nations and among people who are being ruled by these nations. Freedom is not something which we can take lightly even in this age when it is being raped day and night. It has to be an institution recognized by law and by the public for it to work. People and nations have very short memory spans and would tend to forget such tenets unless they are stated again and again. This is why it is done.

Let us examine the main principles of the resolution.

One, it recognizes that

“the exercise of the right to freedom of opinion and expression is one of the essential foundations of a democratic society……….”

It also recognizes that

“the effective exercise of the right to freedom of opinion and expression is an important indicator of the level of protection of other human rights and freedoms, bearing in mind that all human rights are universal, indivisible, interdependent and interrelated,”

Well who would have anything to say against these I wonder?

It is deeply concerned about the violations to this right reported from all over the globe. This is an incontrovertible fact.

It stresses the importance of dissemination of information through all channels to make freedom possible. It recognizes

“the importance of all types of media including the internet in the exercise, promotion and protection of the right to freedom of opinion and expression”

I for one support this wholly.

It backs the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights and everything contained in it. And it also expresses continuing concern about the interference of administration in curtailing freedom.

I believe that the resolution has taken most things into consideration except one, that the people have a right to be mentally and emotionally free as well. I would like the future resolutions to specifically enjoin this aspect of the human freedom and stress the importance of preventing the use of technology in covertly subjugating people all over the world.

International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights and Universal Declaration of Human Rights should also be amended to include these newer threats into them.
Let me be very clear here, apart from the concerns of a marginal section of people in the US the resolution appears healthy and dependable on the whole and would be acceptable to those who take freedom as an inviolable right. It can be improved no doubt but is not harmful in any way to the interests of the world and its people.
